Joshua Perez talks His Background, Influences, “Broken”, and What’s Next

The ability to connect with the listener determines how far one can go. Building that attachment with the listener to make them life long fans of your work, knowing they can run to your tunes for the answers or friend they can need. Joshua Perez can do all of that and sky is the limit for this one of a kind talent. We became fans of his work after hearing his new record “Broken”. We had to know more and he was gracious enough to take the time to answer some questions for us. Below is the interview.

Who is Joshua Perez the artist?

I’m a local artist from Toronto, began my journey in high school singing opera around the world and now I want to create music that reaches people’s hearts and emotions deeply.

Who are some of the influences and how do you incorporate that into the music?

A huge influence is Lewis Capaldi, his music is rich with emotions and beautiful vocals that cut you deeply when you listen. I try bringing the same authenticity in my music by being completely bare bones with my own emotions and writing songs about things that have affected me physically and mentally. I write sad songs to pop music tracks to relate with a bigger audience and share my own story so that hopefully others can learn from the mistakes I’ve made.

What was your favorite part of creating your new song “Broken”?

I loved writing the lyrics. I watched the darkest parts of me manifest into words on a page and saw my own truth coming to light. It was an emotional process and as soon as I had the lyrics I knew this would be the next song I would release. I think the process of writing the song helped me shed some light on my own internal battles and by making that public I hope it is loved and appreciated by more people.

How did you know it was time to drop “Broken”?

When I had the lyrics and melody, I knew this was a song I can’t hide away from myself or other people and decided right then and there that I would release it next.

What is the biggest thing you want people to take away from your music?

I pour my heart and soul into my lyrics and I want them to resonate with more people. I hope they can find solace in my art and grow with me as we work together on becoming better people every day and deal with our everyday emotions.

What’s next for Joshua Perez?

I have a collab coming out next month called “Fall In Love” and what the song is about is pretty obvious, falling in love for the first time,
Some other songs coming out after are Goodbye and Perfect. Will give more details closer to when they are released so stay tuned.
