A lot of different people have their opinion on what an undeniable talent is. For me a undeniable artist is just an artist who can go beyond the subjectivity of music and be recognized no matter what someones preference is. When I heard Rick Smoove’s “Bless Up” I knew he had a talent that could not be denied and hoped to learn more. Rick Smoove was gracious enough to take the time to answer a few questions for us. Below is the interview.
Who is Rick Smoove the artist?
I am an Independent Artist originally from Springfield, MA, but who currently resides in San Antonio, TX. I was infatuated with music at an early age, but never concentrated on it seriously because of my athletic gifts.
I received a D1 football scholarship from Sacred Heart University and that is where a close friend/teammate who was also into music reignited my dormant childhood love for creating music. Over the next several years I used my passion for poetry and gift of creative writing to develop my own style of music. I like to use witty punchlines, subtle harmonies, and catchy hooks to keep my listeners engaged and entertained.
Who are some of your influences? What do you take from them and apply to your music?
My influences range from DMX, Cassidy, and Lupe Fiasco to Lil Wayne, Drake, Tory Lanez, and 50 cent. All of these artist with the exception of Cassidy who is known more for his punchlines are exceptional songwriters and that’s something I’ve worked countless hours on because I know the importance of making quality music that will last and resonate with the audience.
What was your approach when making your song “Bless Up”?
I’m always looking to grow as an artist by continually challenging myself to make different sounding records. As my vocal range has improved over the last year and I’ve been able to develop a unique style of music that has enabled to me make a variety of different sounding songs. The rock/hip hop blend of “Bless Up” instantly caught my ear and from there it was just a matter of letting my creativity take over.
When did you know it was time to release your song “Bless Up”?
I usually don’t release my music soon after creating it but there was an opportunity for me to submit “Bless Up” for consideration into Nba 2K’s video game soundtrack through United Masters, and I just felt that the song would be a perfect fit for the game. As of now I’m still waiting to hear back on their decision.
What do you want people to take away from your music?
I write from a place of experience and empathy, so I really just hope people can relate to what I have to say and hopefully apply what I’ve learned in life into their own experiences.
What’s next for Rick Smoove?
I’m currently working on my first EP and collaboration project with another multi-talented artist that I hope to release before the end of the year. My goal this year has been to release new music every month, so I’m always creating new material in order to establish that consistency.
