Producer Spotlight: Devtrax

Music producers have been providing the score for our lives since the beginning of music. That music that can define the times of our lives, with that special sound. When we heard “Drip” from Devtrax, we knew it was a smash with worldwide appeal. We were curious to know more about the man behind the music and was fortunate to get him to answer some questions for us. The spotlight is on Devtrax.

Who is Devtrax the Producer?

I am Devtrax and Devtrax is an electronic dance music producer and DJ originally from the bay and now living in Los Angeles. Devtrax is all about creating music that gives people energy and allows them to feel confident in everything they do. He is all about that feeling of the city at night; freedom from judgement and individuality.

How did you get into producing?

I got into producing my freshmen year of college. I had originally started listening to electronic music during my senior year of high school, listening to the original Monstercat releases. I didn’t really understand it at first but I loved the energy that it created. When I arrived at the Berklee College of Music I realized that production was a serious occupation and that there was a huge following for this kind of music. I met a few friends who were into it and we started DJing together and that inspired me to start producing. It was love at first sight and I have been producing ever since!

What production software do you use and why?

I use Ableton because it’s the most intuitive software in my opinion and allows me to quickly get out my creative ideas and keep a good workflow. The software gets out of the way and simply allows me to create.

Whats your creative process when creating “Drip”?

For Drip, I had first made the drop and really liked it but wasn’t really sure where to take the project. I later had started another project with a really great beat and came up with the vocal flow and build. I thought the other drop would fit perfectly and it did. I then expanded the form allowing the song to progress into variations and finishing with a third section that changed a bit leading to the last drop as a climactic finish. I was really proud of the vocal processing and I think they have a unique sound that really stands out.

What was your favorite project to work on and why?

That’s a tough question because with every project I grow into new ideas and concepts and usually whichever project I am currently working on and excited about is my favorite project at the time. But if I had to choose one I would probably say Shut it Down because that was my first time putting my vocals on a track and just really had fun exploring new territory with the drop and discovering who I am as an artist.

If you could collab with any artist who would it be and why?

I definitely think it would be a dream come true to work with Boombox Cartel. They are huge inspirations to me and are always pioneering new ideas and sounds. They constantly push the envelope and I think we could make some super new music that people would connect with. Also were both Mexican which is cool because there aren’t too many of us in the production community.

What’s next for Devtrax?

I am looking to continue pushing my music into new fields and exploring the forefront of combining Hip-Hop and electronic music. The best part for me about producing is being really creative and hitting people with new ideas that they may not have expected but find that they like. So look for me to be continuing to push the envelope and making more great music. I have some really great collaborations in the work that I am super excited to share so be on the lookout for those as well.
